This is an original retrospective that focusses on giving kudos to team members.

This has two purposes:
Firstly, it invites us to learn how to appreciate each others work in a better way.

Secondly, it teaches us something about personal traits, since you’ll probably realize that you prefer different kudos. Some people like it when people notice your dedication to the task and some are more touched by being called helpful. There can be many reasons as to why you prefer a specific kudos. Maybe you have strong values that makes you prefer to be a good friend to you colleagues, or maybe you feel insecure as to if you colleagues find you too inexperienced, so hearing that they “admire your great contributions” might make your day.

It is up to you and your team how much you wish to explore the second part. It might get very personal if you really dig deep, so be aware that some might not be comfortable with this. Don’t force anyone to share feelings that they do not wish to share.

Materials
Use the kudos generator.

Pros
– Learn what kudos each team member prefers.
– Get to know each other better. This retrospective can also be used as a part of team building.

Cons
– In a team that are not comfortable talking about their feelings please be careful not to go to far. This might generate resistance and distrust.

Duration
30-60 minutes

Preparation
Open the kudos generator and share your screen.

Step-by-step

  • Before starting your retrospective, get the Kudos generator ready on the screen.
  • Take it in turns to press the button if possible and ask that team member to give the computer generated kudos to another team member.
  • Continue until you feel it’s time to stop. It might be an idea to stop while the team is having fun and then repeat the exercise another time.

If you have the time and want to personalize this retrospective, you can also write your own compliments and pull them randomly from a bowl in front of the webcam. If you come up with some great kudos that others might benefit from, please let us know by using the comments below.
